Snowdrop walks

Our snowdrop collection was originally established with the help of Henry and Carolyn Elwes of Colebourne who gifted several bulbs during the 1980’s. These plants were originally sited around the base of the ancient ash tree near the walled garden, where they steadily multiplied.

Since 2014 Deputy Head Gardener and Galanthophile Emma Thick has been instrumental in expanding the collection to its current size. In June 2023 we were awarded National Collection status by Plant Heritage. We currently grow over 1000 different varieties of Galanthus.

Over the years we received large donations from National Collection holders, Margaret and David MacLennan.  Tom Mitchell and also the families of Dr. Dowling Munroe, Lally Cox and Sue Bedwell have donated their collections to Thenford.

Our focus is on growing cultivars in suitable locations throughout the garden where they thrive in combination with other shrubs to provide the best show. With the addition of autumn flowering varieties, visitors can now discover the exciting combination of snowdrops and autumn colour if you happen to visit during one of our October open days.

Six open days are held between January and late February. Alternatively, you can book a private visit at your convenience. On Saturday 14th February 2026, we will host our Snowdrop Spectacular, which attracts galanthophiles from across the world. Highlights of our fantastic all-day event include, full access to the gardens, a snowdrop sale and talks by leading experts. It’s a real chance to meet like-minded enthusiasts and get inspired!

Our hands-on lifting & dividing days are an ideal opportunity to improve your plant husbandry and take your garden to the next level.

Why not come along to one of our practical training classes where you can learn the propagation techniques of chipping and twin scaling that will enable you to quickly increase your bulb collection.

We are currently participating in the Morgan Academy Galanthus DNA project. Which aims to help understand the complex relationships within Galanthus.

Our snowdrop open days are fast becoming the most popular events of the year, so if you are interested in attending, please make sure you book early. Here
